Retirement education

Real Estate and Self-Directed IRAs

Some retirement accounts can hold alternative assets, including certain real-estate investments. The rules are technical and mistakes can create taxes or penalties.

Work with a qualified custodian
Avoid prohibited transactions and disqualified persons
Keep expenses and income inside the account
Obtain independent tax, legal, and investment advice

A custodian is required

A self-directed IRA custodian administers the account and investment process. Custodians do not necessarily evaluate the merits or risks of an investment.

Restrictions matter

Personal use, self-dealing, extensions of credit, and transactions with disqualified persons may be prohibited. Financing can create additional tax and structure issues.

Do the diligence

Review fees, custody procedures, liquidity, valuation, insurance, title, financing, sponsor history, and exit risk with independent professionals.
